Outdoor porcelain tiles are designed to withstand all kinds of weather - such as frost, heat, and the UK's signature torrential rain. But are the tiles actually waterproof?
The answer is that, while porcelain tiles cannot be said to be entirely waterproof, they are resistant to water. There are very few things that are truly 'waterproof', as this would require them to be completely impermeable to water.
What makes porcelain tiles water resistant?
Porcelain's absorption rate is incredibly low in comparison to other paving materials such as sandstone and limestone. Porcelain can be classed as an 'Extremely Dense' or 'Impervious' material according to the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), meaning that it has an absorption rate of 0.5% or less!
This is because porcelain is denser than ceramic and less porous, meaning it is more resistant to water. Compared to ceramic tiles, porcelain tiles are made from a different clay and heated at different temperatures, resulting in higher endurance.
What is the difference between waterproof and water-resistant?
Let's get straight into the definitions...
Waterproof
A waterproof material is completely impervious to water penetration, meaning no water can get in or out at all. If you wear an item of clothing made of a waterproof material, you will have protection against water for a significant period of time.
Water-resistant
A water-resistant material will prevent water penetration, but only to a certain degree. This material will not be entirely impermeable, meaning that it will let a certain amount of water in / out when exposed to high levels.
There's a reason why porcelain is the top choice...
Porcelain paving slabs are becoming an increasingly popular alternative to natural stone products - thanks in no small part to their water-resistant capabilities! It's not difficult to see why porcelain is the top choice: it looks beautiful in any setting, and the specifications are outstanding compared to natural stone.
